Just For Love, A Moment In Time, by Len Guardino, is an original romantic comedy musical drama stage play that blends sharp wit, emotional vulnerability, satire, and theatrical fantasy into a story about love, destiny, reinvention, and female awakening.
At its heart, the story follows Ellen Taylor, a sophisticated, witty, married woman in her late thirties who appears to have the “perfect” life — wealth, family, social standing — yet feels something essential is missing. During a night out with her best friend Mary, what begins as playful banter about aging, marriage, and “soul mates” turns unexpectedly real when Ellen collides — literally — with Grant Michaels, a charismatic nightclub singer.
What starts as comic chaos evolves into a charged romantic connection. Ellen, who once mocked the idea of destiny and passion, finds herself awakened emotionally and physically in ways she never experienced before. The encounter disrupts her carefully structured life and forces her to confront difficult truths: the difference between security and fulfillment; the tension between responsibility and desire; the cost of denying one’s authentic self; the meaning of love beyond fantasy.
The story develops through rapid-fire dialogue, theatrical humor, misunderstandings, jealousy, and musical numbers that externalize the characters’ inner emotional shifts. Ellen becomes determined not only to pursue Grant romantically, but also creatively — proposing that they build a performing act together. What begins as flirtation grows into artistic partnership, symbolizing rebirth and shared ambition.
Running parallel to the romance is a deeper emotional thread: Ellen’s struggle between being mother, wife, and independent woman. Her daughter’s vulnerability, her friend Mary’s own marital dissatisfaction, and Ellen’s confession about an unhappy marriage add emotional stakes beneath the comedy.
As the story progresses, reality and theatrical fantasy increasingly blur. The climax introduces an unexpected twist involving Ellen’s husband and Mary that reframes the romantic conflict in a heightened, almost surreal theatrical way — leaving the reader questioning what is real, what is imagined, and whether love itself is part performance.
The ending asks: Did this transformation truly happen? Was it fantasy? Or is love itself a moment suspended in time?
